From hatchbacks to compact sedans and mini SUVs, consumers have a lot to choose from these days. So if you have a budget of Rs 5 lakh, here are some options for you. (Not in any particular order)
Maruti Suzuki Ignis
The boxy but unconventional looking Ignis is perhaps Maruti's answer to having been called boring in the past.
The youthful car appears a bit like a mini crossover. The base 'Sigma' petrol variant can be yours in under Rs 5 lakh.

The model comes powered by the same 1.2-litre petrol engine that powers the popular Swift and Dzire models. The powertrain, coupled with a five-speed manual gearbox, makes 81PS at 6,000rpm and a peak torque of 113Nm at 4,200rpm. Maruti claims a fuel efficiency of 20.89kmpl for the Ignis.
Features list of the Ignis Sigma includes manual air-conditioner, central locking, Anti-theft system and front power windows. The trim further offers dual front airbags and ABS (anti-lock braking system) with EBD (electronic brake force distribution) for passengers' safety.

Tata Tiago/Tigor
The Tata Tiago is a smart choice for people who have comfort and convenience as a priority. It offers a spread of 13 variants under Rs 5 lakh from a total of 22 available trims.
While Tiago starts at Rs 3.26 lakh -- with both petrol and diesel options available in the above-mentioned price range, -- its sedan version, the Tigor starts at Rs 4.84 lakh for the base petrol trim. The engine options include an 84PS, 1,199cc petrol and a 69PS, 1.05-litre diesel mill, both mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

The models come with features like Tata's ConnectNext Infotainment system, manual air-conditioner, steering mounted audio control, driver and passenger airbags, ABS (anti-lock braking system) with EBD (electronic brake force distribution), ESP (electronic stability control) and more depending on the trim selection.

Renault Kwid
Kwid is Renault's best-selling vehicle in India, primarily due to its affordability and SUV-like styling. Though there is not a single diesel option available, the Kwid has a total of 20 variants with two petrol engine options. Prices begin at Rs 2.67 lakh for the base 0.8-litre manual model and climb up to Rs 4.60 lakh for the top 1.0-litre Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) variant (both ex-showroom, Delhi).
The range-topping Kwid Climber AMT offers a maximum power of 67PS at 5,500rpm and a peak torque of 91Nm at 4,250rpm, and has a claimed fuel efficiency of 24kmpl. The mill comes mated to a five-speed transmission in both manual and AMT options.

With a class-leading ground clearance of 180mm, the Renault Kwid offers a digital instrument cluster, 7-inch touchscreen on the centre console, MediaNAV infotainment system, Bluetooth audio streaming and hands-free telephony in the higher trims.

Maruti Celerio/Celerio X
It is the Celerio that introduced automatic transmission in the affordable segment with its impressive AMT gearbox. While the car looks like a beefed-up version of the Alto from outside, the cabin is quite spacious.
The Celerio is available in 12 variants, half of which are priced under five lakh. Price for the base 1.2 litre manual petrol starts at Rs 4.20 lakh, while the Celerio VXI AMT and MT petrol comes at Rs 4.96 lakh and Rs 4.78 lakh respectively.

The Celerio sports body coloured ORVMs (outside rear view mirrors), an audio system with Bluetooth, AUX-IN and USB connectivity, a driver-side front airbag and has a ground clearance of 165mm.
The hatchback is powered by the K10B engine -- that delivers 67Ps and a peak torque of 90Nm -- available with either a five-speed manual or AMT. It has a claimed fuel efficiency of 23kmpl and a top speed of 150kmph.

The Celerio X is a crossover version of the car and has been priced at Rs 4.62 lakh with additional features like black alloy wheels, auto gear shift, dual front airbags, roof rails and a rear spoiler.
Hyundai Grand i10
Infused with edges and side cuts, the Grand i10 is a sporty-looking car and comes with a starting price tag of Rs 4.7 lakh.
Power steering, front power windows, driver-side front airbag, anti-theft system, two-tone beige and black interior, and power steering among the other features make it a smart buy from the starting variant only.

It's 1.2-litre Kappa VTVT Petrol engine is capable of delivering 82PS at 6,000rpm and peak torque of 113Nm at 4,000rpm, and it comes mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The car claims to return a fuel efficiency of 18.9kmpl.

Maruti Suzuki WagonR
It was in 1999 that Indian roads first witnessed the Maruti Suzuki WagonR. Despite being labelled visually unappealing and boxy, the WagonR has enjoyed a prolonged run in the market.
Under the 5 lakh budget, the WagonR offers a petrol and CNG engine. The base LXI is powered by a 1.2 litre petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission delivering 67PS and 90Nm of peak torque while the WagonR AMT is available with the same specifications but at a price of Rs 4.88 lakh.

Maruti Suzuki Alto800 / K10
The most-selling budget car of India, the Alto 800 starts at a price of Rs 2.51 lakh for the base petrol model and goes up to Rs 3.78 for the LXI CNG variant.
Side-black claddings, cat-eye headlamps and a hexagonal air dam give structure to the otherwise simple-looking Alto.
Powered by the F8D petrol mill and coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission the Alto800 delivers 47PS and a peak torque of 69Nm while the CNG trim is capable of churning 40PS and a peak torque of 60Nm. The top-spec VXI (O) features power steering, remote trunk opener, AC, front power windows, dual trip meter and a driver airbag.

Mahindra's micro SUV, the KUV100 is one of the most affordable compact SUVs in the market. Dual-tone exteriors, a faux-silver skid-plate, and clear-lens tail lamps make the KUV100 a mature looking vehicle.
The base variant comes with a 1.2-litre petrol engine putting out 82PS and 115Nm of maximum torque. Coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission, the KUV100 NXT has a claimed fuel efficiency of 18kmpl.
